History of Advertising

I enjoyed the content for class on Tuesday. The focus of this post is on the Sell and Spin video. I never thought that town criers would be the earliest form of advertisements and commercials. Moving forward in time, the fact that every person sees upwards of 3,000 ads per day is shocking. With this, the idea that almost everything we see is an ad in and of itself is a captivating point to stop and think about. We live in a culture of consumption driven by advertisements everywhere, and personalized ads have revolutionized the selling market. Everyone participates in consumption, but it is up to us to step back and think about the product’s source and the ethics of personalized advertising.

    Katrina I like how you engaged with what we learned in class and also talk about how these things connect to us in the modern day. This is important because as things are created the evolve and change over time due to the innovation of technology/other factors. I hope as the semester progresses that we are able to make connections with other units discussed in class.

    I like the comments you made about the Sell and Spin video. I think it gave an interesting perspective on advertising, especially since it is a bit dated with its production in 1999. However, I think it still gave a realistic impression of how much consumerism and advertisements take up our day-to-day lives. It is wild to try and imagine a world nowadays that was not run by consumerism.

    These are some really great take-aways from this week. I think that it is very eye opening how much consumerism is pushed through ads and like you said, very important to really examine where the product is coming from and I think too if it is something we really need to buy.
